The book ‘Collages & Assemblages’ was published in 2017 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Verbeke Foundation. This book gives an overview of the collage and assembly collection of Geert and Carla Verbeke-Lens. Verbeke Foundation is currently working on a second book on this beautiful private collection.
The core of geert and Carla Verbeke-Lens’s private collection consists of an exceptional collection of more than 5000 collages and assemblages from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. A separate room has been set up to exhibit part of this collection permanently. Not all works are visible at all times. A new exhibition is being set up twice a year.
The collection built around the work of mainly Belgian artists includes collages from the early 20s (Avant Garde and Dada period) by Paul Joostens, Georges Herbiet, Henri Van Straten, Michel Seuphor, Marcel-Louis Baugniet and Jean-Jacques Gailliard. She also consists of collages by surrealists such as E.L.T.Mesens, Marcel Mariën, Gilbert Senecaut, Louis Scutenaire, Jane Graverol, Rachel Baes, Robert Willems and Roger Van De Wouwer. Several of these collages were lent for exhibitions at the Museum of Bucharest (Belgian Surrealism), the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (Dada), the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bergen (Surréalism and Belgique 1920-2000 with curator Xavier Canonne) and the Musée du Louvre in Paris (Jan Fabre, L’Ange de la Métamorphose).
